BYSTANDER INTERVENTION

what is bystander intervention?

Bystander Intervention is a prevention method that empowers individuals to share responsibility for the safety of all members of their community by encouraging safe, effective, and non-violent actions to stop a problematic situation.

The Bystander Intervention Training Program outlined below sends a clear message to participants that sexual misconduct (sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, intimate partner violence / dating violence, and sexual exploitation) is not tolerated or excused in their campus community. Although the program specifically focuses on sexual misconduct, the training program equips participants with the skills to intervene when they witness bullying, hazing, discrimination, or hatred.

CONTENT WARNING
Every training begins with a conversation about the potentially-triggering content of the program. Participants are invited to practice self-care throughout the program, and encouraged to check in with a facilitator after the program to debrief any particularly challenging feelings they experience.
BYSTANDER INTERVENTION ANIMATION
Through funding from the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence, Holman created an animation that discusses the prevalence of sexual violence and introduces the 3D’s of bystander intervention. After the animation, facilitators review influences that impact individuals decision to help or not help when they witness problematic situations. Click here to view the animation.
CASE STUDIES
Facilitators split the class into four groups and ask students to apply bystander intervention strategies in four situations in which sexual misconduct occurs. The language used in the case studies is intentionally inclusive, and is tailored to specific campus communities. Using the case studies, students discuss how to safely, effectively, and non-violently stop sexual assault, stalking, intimate partner violence, and sexual exploitation in small groups. Facilitators mediate a conversation with all participants about what form of sexual violence is occurring and discuss participants' intervention strategies.

HOW TO HELP A FRIEND
Survivors on campus most commonly disclose their experiences of sexual or domestic violence to their close friends or roommates. It is incredibly important that students have the language and resources to empower their friends who have experienced harassment, abuse, assault, or violence. Facilitators discuss the importance of believing survivors, empowering survivors with resources, having patience during the healing process, and practicing self-care. Most importantly, this section of the program offers students appropriate language for supporting their friends and helps all students develop empathy for survivors of sexual violence.
CAMPUS RESOURCES
Facilitators remind students of the multiple support services available to survivors of sexual misconduct on campus; every participant receives printed materials with confidential resources and reporting options specific to their campus and community.
